Schools admissions website crashes

Mar 03, 2010

A schools admissions website crashed on Tuesday, leaving 500,000 children still not knowing which school they are to attend in the autumn.

The 11-year-olds now face a few days' wait before they find if they will be going to the secondary schools of their choice. Parents had been urged to sign up to the website to avoid paperwork by receiving the news by email. However, the computer system then crashed which is thought to have affected 35,000 families.

London Councils, the lobbying organisation which promotes the interests of London's 33 councils and oversees admissions in the capital and surrounding areas, said it is fixing the problem and that parents would receive a letter of the development.

Almost all children who live in rural areas are due to get their desired school places, although a sixth around the country will not.
