The BBC will investigate why some users had difficulty accessing its website during a fascinating evening of sporting events, it has confirmed.

Viewers complained on micro blogging site Twitter that the BBC site had crashed in the early evening on Thursday, leaving them unable to catch coverage of Wimbledon or the World Cup.

The crash, which occurred at around 5pm, meant some users missed out on seeing World Cup holders Italy knocked out by Slovakia and coverage of the longest running tennis match in history, between American John Isner and Frenchman Nicolas Mahut.

Instead of being able to access the BBC website, some online users were met with the "500 Internal Server Error" message.
