A Canadian gambling website shut down amid problems with the privacy of users' personal details will not reopen yet, it has been confirmed.

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) closed down PlayNow.com after it was revealed that users were able to access the personal information of others and gamble with their money. It said the site will not immediately reopen.

Primarily the BCLC thought the problem was related to a surge of new customers using the site, but it later found there had been a breach of privacy.

The move to close the sports and betting website comes soon after its launch.

It is thought that a number of gamblers had seen other users' bank details - with some said to be able to gamble with others' money.

A probe was launched by Elizabeth Denham, BC's information and privacy commissioner, in a bid to get to the bottom of the issue.

She said the province would have to be sure that the privacy of online gamblers was secure before the website could be reinstated.

A public report will be made available once the investigation has been completed.
