With the cost of upgrading from Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6 cited to
be a burden on the taxpayer, the Government has said the outdated
version will continue to be used in all of its departments.
In response to a petition to "Encourage government departments to
upgrade away from Internet Explorer 6", the Government said that
upgrading to IE8 involves a "very large operation", which would add
"significant potential cost to the taxpayer".
The petition, signed by 6200 people, raised concerns over the security
lapses associated with IE6 and pointed out that the Government should
lead the way in upgrading from the browser.
The Government said: "There is no evidence that upgrading away from the
latest fully patched versions of Internet Explorer to other browsers
will make users more secure. Regular software patching and updating will
help defend against the latest threats."
It added that the most cost effective approach would be IE6, supported by anti-malware software and firewalls.
